QiMen Forecasting is extremely useful in establishing the circumstances behind the question you have in mind. It allows you to see a holistic picture and the likelihood of whether or not you might be able to gain your goal. However, not all forecasts are positive.
In fact, there are times that getting what you want might seem unlikely; if not outright impossible.
Besides the existence of negative formations, the most common indicator that things won’t go your way in a QiMen Forecast is when the Hour Palace counters the Day Palace. In most contexts, this is always an inauspicious result. The odds are literally against you and whatever it is you’re doing right now won’t be getting you to where you want to be.
However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that all hope is lost. You might still be able to turn it around by looking for the mediating element. For example, if Water is being countered by Earth, look for Metal. If Wood is being countered by Metal, look for Water. It is always the element in-between two opposing elements that can realign you to what you’re asking for.
To demonstrate how this works, this is a chart plotted at 16th January 2020 9:00AM:
In this chart, the Hour stem is residing in Qian (NW) Palace while the Day stem is in the Xun (SE) Palace. Evidently, this is a Metal countering Wood and thus it’s not favourable for the asker. As the mediating element between these two palaces is Water, we’ll have to look at the Kan (N) Palace.
For certain configurations, sometimes there are two solution palaces. Fire counter Metal requires Earth to mediate and there are two Earth Palaces is one such case. When this happens, what it means is you have options. Between the two, it would be advisable to pick the solution that’s more relevant and actionable to you.
The philosophy of Qi Men Dun Jia is, after all, doing whatever it takes to get whatever you want. Even when it seems unlikely for you to succeed, this ancient art of warfare allows you to create your own outcome… provided you have what it takes to pull through.
