A Game of Stems

In the Game of Stems, you either let your sister marry your enemy or die.
When Qi Men practitioners learn about the 10 Heavenly Stems in the context of Qi Men Dun Jia, each of them represents a certain meaning or role. For example, Wu Earth represents money and capital. The underlying reason why this is so has something to do with how the Stems interact with one another. It’s a story of Jia Wood’s war against Geng Metal.
Originally, Qi Men Dun Jia was developed for the purpose of military tactics and strategy. The name itself is a reference to hiding the Jia Stem, which is the commander, so that it won’t be attacked by the Geng Stem, representing the enemy. If you expand this narrative further, it unravels a web of complex relationship between each of the “characters”.
Each of the Heavenly Stems combine with one another. Jia with Ji, Yi with Geng and so on. If you consider the Yin and Yang pair of an element as siblings, then it’s a case of the sister marrying the enemy in order to save the brother. For example, Yi Wood is Jia Wood’s sister and it combines with Geng Metal. With this union, Geng Metal won’t be harming Jia Wood.
In Qi Men readings, Wu Earth generally represents capital or money. This is because Wu is considered to be Jia’s treasurer; as Wood counters Earth, Wu is Jia’s wealth element. Bing is produced by Jia in order to combat Geng, but he is seduced by Geng’s sister, Xin. Thus, Bing is considered Jia’s strongest ally and Xin is associated with cunningness and schemes.
The story of how the 10 Stems are interrelated gives new light to their meaning. Depending on the circumstance, some Stems may change sides and fluctuate from being auspicious and inauspicious. As the Heavenly Stems generally represent people in most readings, it is fitting that interactions between them is as varied and complex as real human relationships.
