1. Family Emergency

A dreaded emergency at home means you need to cut travel plans short and return immediately.

What to Do: If you have travel insurance, some of your change and cancellation expenses may be covered. If you don’t have travel insurance, you may still be able to get some of your flight change fees waived by calling the airline and explaining the situation with evidence.Then call the airline, explain the situation, and see if you can change to a preferred earlier flight. Hotels are unlikely to offer a refund for prepaid nights, but you may be able to negotiate rebooking at a later date for no charge.

2. Stolen Passport Or Credit Cards

It’s every traveller’s nightmare to find yourself in a foreign country robbed of your passport or credit cards.

What to Do: If you scanned your passport and either kept a physical copy in another part of your baggage or stored it in email or online, well done. Call your bank to report that the cards have been stolen and notify the local police. Then, contact the nearest embassy or consulate to get an emergency replacement passport.

3. Credit Card doesn’t work

Sometimes your bank falls asleep and forgets to hear you when you tell them you will need to activate your card for overseas expenditure.

What to Do: Always have a back-up credit card or debit card or two. Travel with an ATM card so you have both cash and card options is another good idea. And of course, there are always the old-fashioned standbys of bringing travellers’ checks or converting currency at the airport or a local agency.
