The North Dipper Seven Stars

Have you ever wondered how the 9 Stars of QiMen Dun Jia are derived? The 9 Stars are very crucial in QiMen because they govern the ‘Heavenly matters’. Let’s explore the concept of the 9 Stars in detail this week.

Only the Brightest Stars
As above, so below. That has been the crux of all Chinese Metaphysics theories. Anything and everything from Feng Shui to BaZi and QiMen can be traced back to the stars. The gravitational pull of the stars is believed to be the source that forms the constant circulation of energy here on earth.
In Chinese Metaphysics, the Heavens dictate the time, the Earth dictates the place and the Man dictates the people who can offer one the keys to victory. To determine whether opportunities exist at a given time or place, we must take into consideration and understand the role of the Heaven, namely the 9 Stars.
The components of Qi Men Dun Jia are tied to astronomy and celestial bodies, but the 9 Stars make their connection to the night sky explicit. The 9 Stars are derived from celestial bodies found in the Big Dipper, a constellation made up of the brightest stars from the Ursa Major (Great Bear) constellation.
The North Dipper Seven Stars
The ancient Chinese developed an acute interest in the Big Dipper, referring to its contents as the North Dipper Seven Stars 北斗七星. They are known collectively as the Seven Stars of the Northern Ladle because of the constellation’s resemblance to a plough or ladle.
The stars located in this constellation are arguably some of the most culturally important as they feature in many fables and belief systems.
So why only Seven Stars when there are 9 Stars in QiMen Dun Jia? Actually, the Seven Stars are traditionally part of a larger group of nine where two other stars are hidden. Collectively, they are positioned like the following:
Stars and Energy
Ancient Chinese astrologers theorized that these stars have a significant influence on the lives of people. Energy flows from the Seven Stars and affects the Earth, which in turn alters the energy fields of an individual in more ways than one. This has a direct effect on an individual’s daily life and energy patterns. Hence the difference in heavenly luck between one individual and another.
In essence, the Seven Stars has an important bearing on outcomes of important events. They can be used to tell the effectiveness of a specific sector. To put it in simpler terms, it lets us know who has the ‘divine’ favour.
Throughout history, the Seven Stars have been used in important battles such as in the legendary Battle of the Red Cliffs in which Zhuge Liang was noted to have used the Seven Stars Path with the help of QiMen Dun Jia to defeat Cao Cao’s army.
7 Stars and 9 Stars
In closing, let us summarize what we have learn about the North Dipper Seven Stars into a context that is easier for all to understand.
In general astrology both Western and Chinese, only the seven visible stars in the North Dipper Seven Stars constellation are taken into account. But in Chinese Metaphysics, the two additional hidden stars also play important roles.
In Xuan Kong studies (which has more to do with Feng Shui application), these stars correspond to individual type of mountains such as the Huge Door Star and the Greedy Wolf Star among others. These mountains generate different type of energy that enhances different aspects of a person’s life.
The seven visible stars in this constellation when transliterated into QiMen context are the Heavenly Pillar, the Heavenly Heart, the Heavenly Bird, the Heavenly Assistant, the Heavenly Destructor, the Heavenly Grain and the Heavenly Grass. The two remaining hidden stars are the Heavenly Hero and the Heavenly Ambassador.
Taking into consideration all 9 Stars of the North Dipper Seven Star enables the application of Chinese Metaphysics (in particular QiMen Dun Jia) to be as accurate as possible in its forecasting of the effects of the ‘Heavenly’ aspects on our daily life.
