Yin and Yang is a fundamental concept of Qi Men Dun Jia and the rest of Chinese Metaphysics. Learn the philosophy and the hidden meaning behind this concept.
It’s easy to feel at lost on what is the right thing to do.In our dilemma, we tend to seek advice from others. Some might tell you, “you’re doing too much” while others disagree and say “you’re doing too little”. These contradicting opinions may cause more confusion, but they are actually interrelated.
If you were to break down your decisions to its bare basics, everything boils down to two options; either you do something or you don’t. This simple concept is not only the basis of Qi Men Dun Jia but all of Chinese Metaphysics as well. It’s the concept of Yin and Yang, how everything exists in a state of opposites and yet they are complementary to one another.
To do something, to act, taking action, being active, all these things are associated with Yang. To lie in wait, to anticipate, to be on the defensive, being passive, these things on the other hand has traits of Yin. When you’re facing problems in life, sometimes you have to take the initiative to solve it (Yang) and sometimes you just have to wait it out (Yin). Simple enough?
Of course, life is anything but simple. You’d want to know how long do you need to wait, what is the right action to take and so on. This is where all the other components like the Doors, Stems, Stars and Deities come into play to determine the variables. Nonetheless, it doesn’t change the fact that when the QiMen chart says its favourable, you act (Yang) and when it says unfavourable, you don’t (Yin).
As demonstrated, a simple concept can become complicated, then it can become simple again. This is why in the Yin and Yang symbol, there is a black dot in the white area and vice versa. Within Yang, there is a seed of Yin and within Yin, there is a seed of Yang. Yin eventually becomes Yang, Yang eventually becomes Yin. If this sounds confusing to you, here’s a practical way to put it:
If you don’t like how things are in your life right now and you want change (Yang) to happen, you have to be open and receptive (Yin) towards it. If you desire a form of stability in your life (Yin), you have to work and put effort (Yang) to achieve this goal. Yin becomes Yang, Yang becomes Yin. Everything is connected and both Yin and Yang are simply two sides of the same coin.
The philosophy of Yin and Yang is all about balance. You can’t have one thing without the other. If you are pure Yang, constantly doing everything non-stop, there is no stability and you’ll end up achieving nothing. If you are pure Yin, not doing anything whatsoever, then it is a state of stagnation. Yang depends on Yin for stability while Yin depends on Yang for growth.
